A 44-year-old woman was rescued by two neighbours after a fire ripped through a ground floor flat in Shropshire.

The two men forced their way through the front door of the property in Sundorne, Shrewsbury, last night after smelling smoke and found the victim lying in a corridor.

They pulled her out of the flat before starting to give her first aid as the emergency services arrived after being called at about 8.10pm.

The woman was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after suffering burns to both arms and smoke inhalation.

Steve Purslow, station manager at Shrewsbury Fire Station, said if it was not for the actions of the men, who were in the flat above, the outcome could have been worse.

He said: “The neighbours smelt smoke and came downstairs. They found their way into the corridor, found the lady and brought her out.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
