Neighbours have not seen Mr Taylor since Tuesday when police swooped on Mortimer Drive in Orleton, near Ludlow, where the couple have lived for more than 15 years.
It is understood Mr Taylor, a local funeral director also in his 60s, is being questioned in Hereford.
Detectives at West Mercia Police were last night granted an additional 36 hours to question Mr Taylor over his wife’s disappearance.
Police have stepped up their operation in Orleton over the last few days with officers conducting door to door inquires.
It is understood Mrs Taylor’s body has not been found and she is still officially classed as missing.
Local people have been updating a Facebook page originally set up five months ago to help find Mrs Taylor, with some referring to Mr Taylor’s role in the investigation.
Chris Ammonds, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said officers had been granted more time to question the man in custody.
He said: “House to house inquiries will continue in and around the village.”
Villagers say they are shocked by recent developments and have described Mr and Mrs Taylor as involved in the local community. Mr Taylor has been acting as caretaker for the village hall.
