A multi-million pound contract to supply anti-slip flooring to Olympic venues has been won by a Telford company.
Tweedale-based J&A Stevenson landed the rights to installing the flooring to a temporary terminal at Heathrow Airport, which will handle more than 10,000 athletes and 37,000 bags during the Olympics.
The contract will also see the company installing the goods at Olympic venues, including the Aquatic Centre and the Olympic Village. John Stevenson, 74, and his sons Adrian and Stuart and grandson David, who run the company, said it demonstrated a thriving manufacturing industry in Telford.
Adrian Stevenson said: “We were contacted by BAA architects to come up with an anti-slip system that would be load-bearing for the new temporary Olympic portal terminal. We designed a system for their use, sent them a sample which resulted in winning the full contract.
"We are delighted to see the product now installed at the Olympic portal site. But this initial order has had a huge snowball effect and has seen further orders running the total value into millions of pounds.”
Mr Stevenson added: “We have also produced anti-slip boarding for many areas and venues where the Olympic Games will be taking place.
“We have and continue to supply materials on a daily basis for the Olympic games and we have also been supplying the Olympic village with anti-slip products for some considerable time.
“The most recent order has seen Balfour Beatty commission J&A Stevenson to do the works at the Olympic Aquatic Centre
“This really has been a fantastic year and we are proud to see our products being used in an event which will be watched by millions of people across the world.”
