Shropshire County Show bosses today revealed this year's event was their 'best ever' – with nearly 16,000 people pouring through the gates.

A total of 15,749 people attended the show on Saturday, 5,000 more than last year's two-day show.

About 600 tickets were sold online, it has been revealed.

Organisers are still calculating the number of advance tickets sold in the days leading up to the show, which took place in glorious sunshine and sweltering summer temperatures.

Bernie Hutchinson, show director, hailed the event's success which was in its first year under a one day format after being previously staged as a two-day event.

He said: "We had some of the highest cattle numbers seen in many years with 369 beef entries and 132 dairy, judged by a national team of judges representing no fewer than 14 beef breeds and five dairy breeds.

"The one-day event had certainly drawn some of the top cattle in the Midlands if not the country and made it extremely hard work for the judges to award their champions.

"One judge commented on the day it was one of the best shows of cattle he had seen for a number of year and a real credit to the exhibitors and the show for hosting a fantastic and well organised event," he added.

He added: "This traditional agricultural event being shared and admired by thousands of people from throughout Shropshire and the West Midlands is a true showcase and shop window for Shropshire and national agriculture."

Attractions included Monster Trucks, a display of vintage tractors, a parade of hounds from the North Shropshire Hunt and over 200 trade stands.
