Sorry, but this is all rather meaningless.

I get 7.5Mb/s. People living a couple of hundred metres away can can over 50Mb/s. Why? Because their road has been patched in to the spangly new FTTC cabinet and I'm still waiting for ours to be connected.

When it's available, what if I connect to FTTC and my next door neighbour doesn't? Does the map represent true speeds in an area, or does it represent people's buying choice?

John Howard

I would be very surprised if it represented buying choice. More likely it shows the supplier's apathy and the fact that they can get away with selling broadband on old infrastructure. Personally, I have no choice. It's BT and it's Third World network or nothing. Sadly I still have to pay the same as people on ten times the speed that I get. The first supplier to stick a fibre my way gets my business.

The Original Jake

Yes, but a postcode map? Useful? When FTTC is available, speeds in my precise postcode will vary from the 3Mb/s I was getting before I made a simple change to the wiring in the master socket (it's not always the provider's fault) to the 7.5Mb/s I get now to 70Mb/s on FTTC.

Bob

I get 3.5mb/s on LLU broadband. With regular broadband this would be less or if I went with BT Infinity FTTC it should be much higher. So I agree it is a pointless map. As the previous poster mentioned it's all to do with what people are prepared to pay or what package they have.

BobH

If only that were true Bob. Out here in Marton we are desperate to get a decent broadband setup. Our nearest exchange is in Chirbury, 3 miles away. So, whilst this may not appear to be a useful exercise for you, it is for me and others unfortunate enough to be held ransom by rip-off ISP's charging me the same as they charge people who actually can get the speeds the ISP's jabber on about. If life was fair, they would be made to charge a fee, say £1, per MBps that they can supply without it dropping out all the time, which ours does. BT have said the line is restricted to a max of 1.75MBps to keep it stable. That is a joke as I have only ever seen that speed twice on speed tests since February this year. If the ISP's were made to restrict their pricing per MBps as I suggest, then perhaps they would all get their proverbial fingers out and update the very outdated (made for phones only) infrastructure. They are very willing to take our money, it's about time they spent some of it on modernising it all, and not the 2MBps the Government bang on about. If it's to be upgraded, make it 100MBps, or better, like in South Korea. Our Broadband network in this country is worse than third world. In Africa, right now, they are building a Broadband network that outstrips our best in the cities. This is being rolled out even in outlying villages.

Bob

According to the broadband streetstats website, Marton has three results with speeds of 2.3mb/s, 3mb/s and 5.9mb/s. A mixed bag there really and no indication of what speed to expect from one property to the next

BobH

Bob, are you referring to the 'speed checker site?' Where I think Orange, PlusNet and another say they have much higher speeds? I have yet to check with them to see what the reality of their claims are, as a BT Openreach engineer lives in our village, at the end of it, and he can't get anything above 1.0Mbps.

So, at least this attempt to discover a trend in BB speed spread across the county has uncovered some helpful information along with some facts, BB in the UK sucks.

quinny

I find this pretty pointless too, mine varies depending on time of day and can be 2 mb one hour and 12 mb the next.

The most important thing to do is to register your support for the campaign to bring better broadband to Shropshire - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SBDR

You're not signing up for anything, and every extra bit of support will help!

Pat

We have no reliable connection at all.

BT will not update the line as we are 17miles from the nearest exchange.

All the ISPs rely on the BT network .

The test on line shows 0.2 mb so there is no point in paying the same as someone who can get a 10mb service.

Matt

Agreed, this a rather pointless subject. A week ago I would have done this and I would barely be getting 10mbps. I have upgraded my TV package and now have the 100mbps.

All this "survey" is going to show is buying habits.

h.saddington

i too was getting only 0.2mbs but after spending hours on the phone to india, followed by a visit from a bt engineer, the fault was traced in the bt network and i now get between 5.5 to 6.5mbs

I don't understand all the technical talk, but I do know that when I signed up with TalkTalk I was promised up to 8MB, but all I have ever got here in SY4 is less than 0.5MB.

Being in the countryside I doubt it will ever improve.

BobH

Most of you seem to be missing the point here. This is a survey of BB speeds across Shropshire, to highlight where the worst and best of it is. That way the powers that hold the coffers might just release some money to help BT get off their backsides and update the network out in the country. I used to live in Bishops Castle, and got a decent speed there, but here in Marton, it is garbage. Talk Talk blames BT, BT says nothing. The Engineers said 80% of the lines up the road from us need replacing as there is so much noise on them. Copper wire is no match for Fibre Optic, and at least the Fibre won't get stolen.

bit grumpy

Hello, Virginmedia=30 download 3 upload ALL the time, I feel sorry for people getting 0.486 upload and 0.25 upload!

ME

I live just out of Ludlow and my download speed is max 0.3mb and upload is 0.1mb. Ive been told that i can recieve 2mb and im on a 8mb service but i never see any higher than 0.3mb. They really need to sort it out and stop giving people who already have like 6-10mb speeds, MORE!

If i want to watch a youtube video in SD, if the video is 4mins long, it takes about 8-10mins to load it. Very Annoying.
