Free swimming at Shropshire pools

Free swimming is to be offered to every single person in Shropshire in the run up to the Olympic Games. Shropshire Council is opening up all of its swimming pools for the public sessions once a week during the eight-weeks before London 2012.

Every Tuesday between May 1 and June 30 free swimming will be available at Oswestry Leisure Centre and Whitchurch Swimming Centre.

It will also be available at Market Drayton Swimming Centre, Much Wenlock Leisure Centre and The Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre in Shrewsbury.

Swimmers at Bridgnorth Leisure Centre will be offered free sessions on Wednesdays.

The council is also offering residents free gym inductions at each of its leisure centres which provides fitness suites including the Lakelands Sports Centre in Ellesmere, Thomas Adams Sport Centre in Wem, Idsall Sports Centre in Shifnal, and Shrewsbury’s London Road Sports Centre and Sundorne Sports Village.

The idea is to encourage people in the county to get fit and active ahead of the Games, which has the slogan ‘Inspire a generation’.

Council officials said the move would not cost the taxpayer a penny more because the centres would already be open and staffed.

Shropshire Councillor Steve Charmley, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, said: “The news that we will have free swimming in the eight weeks leading up to the Olympic games is fantastic.

“The Olympics is bringing to Britain a huge enthusiasm for sport at whatever level.

“We believe that giving the people of Shropshire free swimming every Tuesday will give them the chance to keep fit and enjoy sport.

“I hope everybody will take up the offer and our swimming pools will be really busy.”

Swimming sessions at the centres usually cost between £3.35 and £5 for adults and £1.95 and £3 for children.

Council officials said swimming numbers would be restricted and warned that some pools may be full on particular days.

Packed, I would guess.

WHY? is it really a time to be giving things away ? and what purpose does it serve?.

Cheap silly Gimmick

Wile Coyote

We agree on something!!! *faints*

oswestrian

I think this is what a shop would call a "loss leader" - in this case providing the incentive (or at least taking away the excuse) that it is too expensive to try a swim or session at a gym.

The aim is to try to get people off their coaches and improve their health which is surely an admirable one?

twiggo

I'd rather have Wakeman than free swimming

Andrew finch

Ok but why for singles? is it to get them to find a mate? as i thought petting in public baths was prohibited

JOHN JONES

Andrew, I first met my wife in the old Shrewsbury Swimming baths she was 10years old and I was 12 and we have been together since then.

helen

oswestrian-

Councils aren't shops. Even if they were, what shop would give away all its goods just before selling up?

Mermaid

This is a great idea in theory. However the reality is that no one will actually get fit because the pools will be so packed that no one will be able to do much swimming. Im a regular swimmer at Oakengates. When the government introduced free swimming for over 45's and under 18's a few years ago it was horrendous. Gangs of lads diving on top of everyone and general mucking about getting in the way of those trying to get fit. The staff didnt know how to deal with it. Sorry to be negative!

Simon Parton

I know exactly what you mean there. I remember one particular loud-mouth who was just there to mess about most evenings. Really annoying!

adam

<i>"Council officials said the move would not cost the taxpayer a penny more because the centres would already be open and staffed."</i>

But they would be already open, staffed and taking money and now they won't be taking money - how can that not have cost implications? If it has no cost implications then why do they ever charge?

really confused

Yep, council workers really don't have a clue about making a business run succesfully, do they?

adam

What on earth are you talking about? Our Tory councillors really don't have a clue about how to provide public services efficiently, clearly.

JOHN JONES

adam, That's what I asked them when they took away our free O.A.P. passes, but they failed to reply.

Mermaid

Good point Adam!

DevilsChair

Yes, but time you started thinking a bit more wider - if people are swimming - getting healthier - socialising - being positive - getting out of the house more then it impacts on NHS use. eg it goes down because they are fitter and happier and taking part in society, so save the NHS money and us all money.

It's time we started measuring services like swimming do in monetary terms for society - because that's all the petty-penny-pinchers who set budgets think about. ('..know the price of everything and value of nothing' comes to mind).

adam

My point was nothing to do with the decent provision of public services (which our council are very bad at, and it's going to get a lot worse as it goes out to private tender), it was just about what a lousy argument they were making to support what they were doing. I agree with pretty much everything you say.

Bob

I loved it when free swimming was in place for our two children. It's great for them to get confidence in water, have fun and get a bit of exercise.

But why is it only on a Tuesday, every person who works for a living will be unable to take their families while the families that I subsidise to a certain extent with my taxes will be able to go there?

Everyone should have free swimming at all times, less money spent on shopping centres that are obviously going to empty when finished and monuments that are poorly planned and executed would surely go some way to funding this benefit.

Don't get me wrong, I actually like the Darwin Arch in Mardol and the Quantum Leap on Smithfield road. It just seems that more money is funnelled into them due to bad planning. The Darwin Arch is ruined because someone never noticed the big BT box in the middle of it until it was too late. The Quantum leap didn't meet in the centre when both ends went up. That's unbelievable, they can make a tunnel from France To England but not that... On top of that there seems to be no accountability, did you hear of anyone being disciplined or sacked for these decisions? Nope.

Rant over. Enjoy your free swimming on Tuesday when I'm at work.... :-(

Roger

Bob Without any rant, I enjoyed taking my granddaughter swimming before it was made free of charge for children and pensioners. It was even better when it was and we used the facility regularly. When the tories cancelled this service I was disappointed because others, not us, would be deprived of a oppertunity to improve their health, fitness, and social practices. Any move to restore this is welcomed and I agree it should be targeted at times when it could be a family activity. Families don't do enough together as it is.

Grim Reaper

"Inspire a generation"? Which idiot dreamt up that slogan? As for "Portfolio holder for health and wellbeing", what a ridiculous title. And once the ludicrous and monumental waste of public money, which is the Olympics, is over, we will then find out the true cost to all of us of having been conned into staging the whole farce.

And with further cuts in government spending likely, no doubt we can all look forward to the charges at our Council run leisure centres being increased to cover their operating costs, as well as the price of having provided these equally silly freebies.

Do those idiotic Councillors running Shropshire Council seriously believe that the opportunity to take a few swims before the Olympics is going to encourage people to get fit? Sure, they'll take the freebies - as anyone would - and that will be the end of their "commitment" to getting fit.

Hannah

A fine gesture, but a gesture is all it is. How many people will actually be able to use this offer? I intended to take my 2 yr old today but found that outside of school holidays the toddler pool is open for one hour a week, and not at all on a Tuesday. A strange choice to exclude the youngest members of our society when as your leader article points out, learning to swim is essential.

Wile Coyote

You don't need a teaching pool to start teaching a 2 year old how to swim.

The people of Shrewsbury need to stop moaning about what they don't have and start taking advantage of the great facilities that they do.

Hannah

I didn't moan about what we have. But I can't take a toddler lane swimming!!!!

Wile Coyote

This is true, but if it's the Quarry that you're talking about, and I suspect it is, then there is public space available from 8am until at least 6pm every weekday.

Brewer

What about Wellington Leisure Centre?

quinny

comes under T+W Council area last time I checked

Wile Coyote

Wrong council.

A taxpayer

It may not cost any more, but that's mere casuistry; the pools will be losing revenue that would have helped to defray the cost. That shortfall has to be found from somewhere. Contrary to local government belief money doesn't grow on trees - it's extracted from the taxpayer.

TerenceExpensiveStamp

It may be free but just remember!, as always, NO Running, Pushing, Acrobatics or Gymnastics, Shouting, Ducking, Petting, Bombing, Swimming in Diving Area OR Smoking!!!

Gareth Jones

said like a true Lifeguard ;)

Silly Sarah

See this news article: http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2012/04/13/no-reopening-date-for-market-drayton-swimming-pool/

Losing 50,000 litres of water a day! I'd hate to see that water bill! Also no idea when its opening again.

Good to see they've chosen Tuesday as the available free swimming day each week - really inconvenient for the employed. Another empty gesture.........

tim

it wont cost shropshire council any money for free swimming at market drayton pool because it is shut until july, by which time it will be taken over by a private company, and the free offer only lasts to the end of june. the pool was shut on the 12 march, surely someone in the council press office knows whats going on???

Captain NEMO

ALL COUNCIL RUN FACILITIES LIKE THIS SHOULD BE FREE ALL THE TIME. wHY SHOULD ANYONE HAVE TO PAY FOR A SERVICE FOR WHICH THEY HAVE ALREADY PAID?????????????????????????

Matthew

Everyone moans when prices go up and apparently everyone moans when a little something is given away for free too!

Its only for one day a week for 8 weeks so those of you who are unhappy at the thought of a gimmicky, free offer will be happy to know that the other 6 days of the week will still be open at the full entrance cost.

If the council wants to do their bit in the run up to the Olympics then what harm does it do to anyone? With the rising costs of living and all the gloom of recession can people just for once be a little happy and celebrate a good piece of news :-)

helen

I'm all for helping people to live healthier lives. However, this looks more like a publicity stunt to try to rescue the reputation of a desperately unpopular council than a genuine attempt to do that. Shropshire Council's cabinet awarded themselves iPads and closed my children's school. They may be hoping that a couple of free swims and a bit of a party for the jubilee will make me forget this, but it won't. Their priorities are wrong and gimmicks like this one don't alter that. If they really want to promote health and well-being, why don't they overturn their cut to free meals-on-wheels? And why not keep our swimming pools publicly owned rather than selling them off, retaining control over prices so that people can afford to swim for the long term, not just for a couple of weeks in the run-up to the Olympics?

Andrew finch

Live a healthy life

walking the public footpaths and hills of shropshire and boarding areas are free to access.

Buy a bike.

The vast majority of keep fit activities can be done for free why swim where some one else has or could peed in?

Gloria

If it doesn`t cost anything more to staff, why did they cut the swimming for the pensioners?

Economist

Oh dear, I think Shropshire Council has got its speedos in a twist. Of course there is a "cost" of giving away free swimming - if Shropshire Council thinks that there isn't they need a revision class in elementary economics.

Marie Antoinette

Let them eat cake.....

Katherine de Gama

To John Jones - lovely posting. I sent you a comment about your loss but was off mains and my battery ran out. It's a lousy time and it doesn't go away.

JOHN JONES

Thank you Katherine, The vet said that she was never in any pain so we kept her going, your right, It is a lousy time,

eva land

We had a very brief period of free swimming for children a year or so ago yet Wales have always provided free swimming for children and music lessons at school too.

Combined with their reduced university fees,no prescription charges and parking at hospitals, we look like we are right mugs living over the border in Shropshire.

The Council used to provide public services!

Until 2009 when the new Tory Council took over, pensioners including my wife used the Quarry pool for free on a regular basis. This was stopped immediately when Councillor Barrow took over. Extra cost = £30 per month.

This concession is on one day a week for 8 weeks after which the private operator'Serco' take over so you can kiss goodbye to any concessions.

I guess we are supposed to be grateful for being at the 'cutting edge' of change, even if it simply means services now cost more, or are no longer provided including Day Centres for Adults, and the Reference Library.

sowhat!

I am a member of shrewsbury swimming baths and i would happily pay more each month if it then made the centre free for under 16s in the school holidays. Our kids need to be much fitter and healthier and swimming is ideal.

Andrew finch

Walking the hills and bridleways/footpaths is also a great way of keeping fit and costs nothing , it gets the children out , gives them excellent exercise .

We need to get children OUT of buildings and back out in to the fresh air once they see what fun they can have outside in the cold , rain and sun from walking ,jogging , fell running granted not many fells round here, canoe, mountain biking , rock climbing, pot holing,we need to promote more out door pursuits to the young, they will soon get rid or cut down on the gadgets .

The good news is they do discover all this usually around the age of 18-20 and go on to enjoy it but we need to get the younger ones out there now.
