Shropshire set to shiver in May

Britain could be set for the coldest May for more than a century as icy blasts from Siberia send the mercury plummeting, forecasters warned today.

Britain could be set for the coldest May for more than a century as icy blasts from Siberia send the mercury plummeting, forecasters warned today.

The Met Office said the first two weeks of May were likely to be unsettled with the prospect of chilly weather, more heavy rain and, in Scotland, snow.

The unpredictable weather comes as Shropshire and Mid Wales were lashed by heavy rain this week – just days after the county was officially declared as being in drought.

The coldest May in the past 100 years came in 1996 when the average was 9C (48F).

But forecasters believe that while the poor weather is likely to continue next month, we may be able to look forward to a sizzling summer.
