The reopening of Cosford's new £2.2 million railway station has been delayed for a second time – after work to completely rebuild the platforms took longer than expected.

The station has been closed since October for the multi-million pound project to replace the old station and platform, which were made almost entirely of wood.

It was originally planned to reopen five weeks ago, but work was delayed when contractors found large lumps of concrete in the embankment which had to be dug out before the metal platform support piles could be installed.

A replacement bus service is continuing to run while the station is closed. No date has yet been given for the reopening, but the station is expected to remain closed for the rest of the week.

A spokesman for Network Rail answered questions from passengers on Twitter today. He said: "Unfortunately, the works have overrun slightly and it hasn't been fully signed over."

The project to rebuild the station at Cosford will feature new platforms and stairways plus electronic information boards.
