A football-mad youngster whose wrist was broken by a wayward shot from Wayne Rooney was today ‘over the moon’ after his hero apologised and promised him a signed shirt.
A football-mad youngster whose wrist was broken by a wayward shot from Wayne Rooney was today ‘over the moon’ after his hero apologised and promised him a signed shirt.
A thunderbolt from the £250,000-a-week Manchester United striker caught nine-year-old Jamie Thomas, from Wem, on the arm.
The shot left him needing hospital treatment as he prepared to watch his first ever Premier League match with dad Andy.
Now Rooney is going to write to the youngster, who is the envy of all his friends, to apologise following the incident during the warm-up at Molineux ahead of Wolves’ clash with the Red Devils last Sunday.
A spokesman for Manchester United said Rooney was totally unaware of the mishap.
He added: “Wayne did not have any idea this had happened. He has now signed a shirt for Jamie and will be writing to him to apologise.”

Jamie, who attends St Peter’s Primary School in Wem, was sat on the front row of the Jack Harris Stand when Rooney’s shot struck him as he raised his arms to protect himself. He ended up missing most of the second half being treated by first aiders.
Jamie’s dad said today: “I’m sure a letter and signed shirt from Wayne Rooney will cheer him up. He’ll definitely be over the moon when he gets it.”
He added: “At first we thought it was just bruising but Jamie wasn’t enjoying the game so we went to the first aiders. We ended up missing most of the second half.
“They wanted us to go to Wolverhampton hospital but we were catching the train so we went to Shrewsbury instead.
“They said it was a clean break and he has to go back in a couple of weeks.”
Paul Berry, Wolves spokesman, said: “We were very sorry to hear about Jamie’s injury and the fact it meant he had to miss some of the game – hopefully he can make a speedy recovery and be back watching football soon.”
He added Jamie is to be invited to watch the Wolves squad train following his ordeal.

I remember Luke Rodgers hitting an old chap in the face with a wayward shot once before kickoff at the Gay Meadow, Luke and Ryan Lowe came into the Tech End to see if the chap was ok....respect.

These wayward shots can be quite damaging. My then fifteen year old daughter was hit in the side of the head with one whilst sitting watching a game in the school gym. She was quite concussed, had no idea where she was for a few hours.A couple of weeks later she developed epilepsy and still has to take tablets for it but otherwise is quite OK. Was it the football caused it? Nothing against the school or the boy who kicked the ball, wasn't his fault but these shots can cause a bit of damage.Shes 28yrs old now.
