The publisher of the Shropshire Star has the fastest growing regional newspaper website network in the UK, new statistics have shown.

The Audit Bureau of Circulation electronic study found the number of average daily visitors to the Midland News Association network, which also includes the website for sister paper the Express & Star, was up 29.1 per cent year on year, the highest rise of any regional newspaper group in the country.

The audit for July to December 2011 found the average daily unique users visiting the MNA network rose to 59,640.

Shropshirestar.com saw a 26.5 per cent year-on-year increase in monthly unique users to 359,989. Daily unique users were up 23.2 per cent to 16,969.

Shropshire Star internet editor Todd Nash said the website was building an audience by providing round the clock news, sport and opinion.

Todd said: "It is great to see that Shropshirestar.com is playing a major part in the success story of the UK's fastest growing regional online network. The Star site offers a distinct service to complement the newspaper which so many readers know and trust."

Innovative iPad and iPhone applications, which allow subscribers to turn the pages of digital editions of the evening newspapers, were launched in January.

Head of digital Will Beavis said: "MNA's digital strategy has ensured that a compelling product is delivered to the growing audience. Online content is enriched with video, picture galleries and other interactive elements to increase repeat visits to Shropshirestar.com throughout the year."
