Entertainers have made a fresh bid to give away live goldfish as prizes at Ludlow's May Fair – two years after the practice was outlawed.

Officials at the Showman's Guild have applied to Ludlow Town Council asking to start giving away the fish at this year's event.

The application will be considered by the services committee tonight and a decision made later.

Councillors banned stallholders at the May Fair from giving away live goldfish after a complaint from a member of the public who condemned the practice after the 2010 event.

Gina Wilding, deputy clerk at Ludlow Town Council, said: "The council decided two years ago it was not a good idea for live goldfish to be given as prizes. Showmen can still give prizes away but they must be different."
