Fire crew called after sleepy smoker sets bed ablaze

A man who went for an afternoon nap in Oswestry was forced to jump out of bed after it caught fire. Fire crews said he had a cigarette before pushing the ashtray under his bed.

Within minutes the bedding at his home in Victoria Street was alight.

Adrian Bowen, from Oswestry fire station, said crews were called to the scene but the man had managed to put the fire out before they got there.

No-one was injured in the incident, which happened just before 3pm yesterday.

But Mr Bowen said it could have been a completely different story if the occupants had left the house and not noticed the bedding had caught fire.

He said it should act as a warning to other smokers that they should always check that their cigarettes were fully extinguished.

Mr Bowen said: “It was lucky he didn’t decide to go out.”
