Talks bid to restore Shrewsbury’s London rail service

Business leaders are to meet the bosses of one of four firms vying for a national rail franchise as the campaign to restore Shrewsbury’s direct rail link to London continues.

Marches Local Enterprise Partnership will meet First Group representatives next month with officials claiming it is vital that the link to the capital is restored to provide a much-needed boost to businesses.

The county has not had a direct link since the Wrexham & Shropshire rail company stopped its service in January last year.

Four companies are vying for the West Coast Main Line train franchise, due to be launched by December 9, which campaigners hope will include the direct link for the county. The preferred bidders are First Group, Virgin Trains, Abellio and Keolis.

Today Dr Geoffrey Davies, chairman of the enterprise partnership, said a meeting had been lined up with officials from First Group next month and it was hoped talks would also be held with the other bidders.

Dr Davies added: “The restoration of a direct rail link to London from our region would be a boost to both the local visitor economy and to businesses which are based here. The Department of Transport has indicated that it would welcome a direct service as part of their final bids, and we are asking for talks with Abellio, Virgin Trains, and Keolis, ahead of the completion of their tender submissions at the start of May.

“Working with the Shropshire, Telford and the Marches Strategic Rail Group, a meeting has already been secured with the fourth short-listed bidder, First Group.

“We are looking forward to putting forward our case for this unmet demand for a direct service and on the longer term aspirations for rail service provision in our area at a meeting next month.”

He added the preferred bidders had been told that as both Telford and Shrewsbury were growth points, the area should see significant growth in travel by rail.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the last direct service closed down due to lack of patronage.
Has Dr. Davies been at work in his laboratory, and invented a magic potion that will make everyone want to suddenly travel to London?

Please correct me if I’m wrong but the reason the patronage levels were so low was because Virgin held the franchise and made certain impositions that put off many customers. For example Wrexham & Shropshire trains were only allowed to go at certain speeds meaning the journey times were considerably longer than if you went via (and changed) at Wolverhampton.

In addition customers were prevented from boarding Wrexham & Shropshire trains at Wolverhampton (presumably because they were significantly cheaper than Virgin!). If the Shrewsbury line is included within a franchise line hopefully these issues will not apply and we will get faster trains and affordable prices meaning passenger levels will be higher. Fingers crossed!

    Here we go again.
It’s basically the same story as the Star ran a few weeks ago when it was MPs seeking meetings.

If the rail companies do not believe there is enough demand, they won’t run the service. End of.
The last company didn’t have enough passengers so where are they suddenly going to come from now?
I’m sure Dr Davies and the Enterprise Group want a rail link – but the system we have is “free enterprise” and that means the rail companies making the decisions that suit their own profits. Perhaps the Enterprise Group are so confident of its belief that there is enough demand it will offer to underwrite the rail companies?
    I doubt it.

This initiative is far too late, as the Govt/DfT have already issued the tender documents for the West Coast franchise and there is no requirement for the winning company to set up a new Shropshire service.
There is absolutely no incentive for First Gp or the other companies to start a new service as there is no subsidy or profit in it for them. The Government has let Shropshire down on this issue and we will remain isolated from the inter-city rail network, with the resultant impact on business and tourism.
