Shrewsbury print works is to close in funding axe

A print works in Shrewsbury which has been run by people with mental health problems for more than 20 years will close next month after health chiefs axed its funding.
Up to 35 volunteers with mental health issues, at Abbey Works off St Michael’s Street, will be affected by the move after funding from NHS Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire County PCT was withdrawn.
The works, which also employ six members of staff, provides printing services for the NHS as well as parish magazines, community newsletters and brochures. It is due to close at the end of next month.
Gill Bailey, of Shropshire adult mental health services, said the closure of Abbey Works was not ‘just about money’.
She added: “We would normally expect some people who attend Abbey Works to successfully move on to individual work placements and this has continued over the last few months.
“For those service users and carers currently involved with Abbey Works, we have ensured that they are personally informed of change by their assigned workers.
“They will also have a comprehensive review to identify how their employment and mental health needs will be met.”
Geoff Ardill, who uses the service to produce a community magazine for Ellesmere and surrounding villages, said: “It’s a great tragedy for it to go.
We’ve always had very good service and the quality has been outstanding.”
