MPs told to delay DVLA axe
Wednesday 22nd February 2012, 4:59PM GMT.
Campaigners fighting plans to close all 39 regional Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agencies across the UK, including Shropshire’s only one in Shrewsbury, today urged MPs to extend the consultation period.
More than 1,200 jobs are at risk under the plans, including 19 jobs at Shrewsbury’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency centre on Battlefield Enterprise Park.
The Government says the closures could deliver about £28 million in savings.
But officials from the Public and Commercial Services Union, which represents the employees facing the axe, were at the House of Commons today to lobby politicians to extend the consultation period by a further 12 weeks. It is currently due to finish in the middle of next month.
A demonstration is due to be held outside the Shrewsbury DVLA centre on February 29 as part of a national campaign by the PCS union to highlight the importance of the regional centres.
