Shropshire goes flipping mad for pancakes
Tuesday 21st February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Shropshire was going flipping mad today to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.
Pancake races were the order of the day as the county marked the start of Lent in style.
At Blists Hill Victorian Town in Telford, the pancake flipping contest has been going on outside the print shop every day since Saturday at noon, with the grand finale due to take place today.
Organisers were hoping for a big crowd to cheer on the runners who, under the rules, all had to wear an apron and flip their pancakes as many times as possible in the one minute allocated.
The Victorian policeman was on hand to ensure fair play by all and the village school teacher was due to hand out certificates to the winners.
In Shrewsbury a pancake race has been organised in Butcher Row, with staff from pubs, restaurants and shops all competing for glory from 11am.
It has been organised by barmaid Laura Hayley, 32, from the Bull Inn.
“We are all independent traders on this street and we all get along, but I’m sure it will be competitive,” she said.
A Wem shop is carrying on a 12-year tradition by making pancakes all week.
The Treacle Mine gives the pancakes away to children and donates cash to charity.
Owner John Murray said: “We’ll probably make about 100 pancakes by the end of the week.”
