£50 fee plan for Wellington traders’ displays axed by council

Controversial plans to charge traders £50 for street displays in Wellington have been scrapped. Telford & Wrekin Council still intends to introduce permits to control the number and size of stalls.

But it says traders will no longer have to pay.

Wellington councillor John Thompson said: “Residents, Wellington Town Council and some shop holders have highlighted an issue where some stallholders unacceptably extended their stores into the street, but a £50 licence fee is not the answer. I am delighted that the cabinet member listened to our case and dropped the plan.”

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for environment, said the fee, although in force in Shropshire, wo- uld not be right for Telford.

He said the town and borough councils would work with traders and Shropshire Chamber of Commerce on a system to “ensure our high streets are safe”.
