Queen to visit Shropshire for Diamond Jubilee
Thursday 9th February 2012, 11:30AM GMT.
The Queen is coming to Shropshire as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations, it was announced today.
She will visit the county during the West Midlands leg of her Diamond Jubilee tour. The two day tour – on July 11 and 12 – will also take in Hereford, Worcester and Birmingham. No details of the Queen’s itinerary have yet been revealed.
Her visit to Shropshire coincides with the county’s main jubilee celebration, likely to involve up to 20,200 people, at RAF Cosford on July 12.
The big day will include a Shropshire pageant and a picnic.
Hundreds of schoolchildren and many local organisations will be taking part in the event, with parades depicting the Queen’s six decades, hangar exhibitions, floats and much more.
The organisers, led by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire Mr Algernon Heber-Percy, were hoping for a royal guest at the event.
The event at Cosford – under the banner of Celebrating 60 Glorious years – will be totally free and aims to thank the Queen for her reign.
There are also plans for historic, artistic, musical and local success stories to be part of the occasion.
The Diamond Jubilee tour starts in Leicester on March 8 and will cover the whole country before it ends in Hampshire on July 25.
The tours will take the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh from the Isle of Wight to Birmingham and from Merthyr Tydfil to Edinburgh and Glasgow.
And the royal couple will travel around the country, from March to July, by a range of means – car, royal train, aircraft and the ship Leander.
