Powys tenants face council rent hike of 5pc
Thursday 9th February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Council house tenants in Powys are facing a hike of more than £170 in their yearly rent bills, it has emerged.
Powys County Council said it would be making a decision to raise the rent on properties by almost five per cent – or an average of £3.33 a week – at Tuesday’s meeting.
It said if the rise was agreed the charges would come into play from April. The 4.95 per cent increase will be considered by the council’s cabinet in Llandrindod Wells.
Cash generated from it would be used to help fund housing services and the work the council is doing to bring its housing stock up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.
The proposed percentage guideline increase by the Welsh Government will see the average weekly rent rise by from £67.26 a week to £70.59 a week. The average guideline increase for Wales is 5.1 per cent.
Councillor Tony Thomas, Powys County Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “If the rent increase was below the guideline set by the Welsh Government, this would result in less revenue to invest in services. This is due to the the complexities of current subsidy arrangements.”
