Subcontractors at Capgemini sent home in jobs risk fears
Wednesday 8th February 2012, 12:29PM GMT.
A number of office staff at one of the biggest employers in Telford have been sent home and told they may lose their jobs next month, union chiefs claimed today.
Workers at Capgemini, in the town centre, were left in tears after being told the news that jobs were at risk by a new management company which has taken over seven offices at the site.
Mitie took over the running of part of the site last week and is responsible for positions on the site including security guards, porters, messengers, engineers, cleaners, caterers and office staff.
The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, which represents workers at the site, claimed seven office staff were sent home on the first day Mitie took over.
Regional organiser Steve Battlemuch said they were told they were at risk of being made redundant in the next 30 days, along with three of the 10 porters and messengers who work at the site.
A spokeswoman for Mitie today said no staff reductions had yet took place and that a consultation phase was under way to identify alternative roles for any individuals affected.
But Mr Battlemuch said: “Staff at the site were shocked as long-serving, loyal and hard-working staff were sent home, many in tears. On day three of the contract, last Friday, 10 porters and messengers were given notice of being at risk of redundancy too.
They were told that three of the 10 staff would have to go as well by March 2, again the minimum 30 days notice.” He added cuts were also expected for security guards.
Erica Lockhart, spokeswoman for the company, said ‘due process’ had been followed at all times. “Mitie is working closely with its employees and Capgemini to ensure that any changes as part of this contract are identified, clearly communicated and constructively introduced,” she said.
