Recycle centre hopes raised after bosses’ cashpot move
Wednesday 8th February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Cleobury Mortimer could get a new recycling centre as part of a development of business units and offices which is proposed for the town.
Plans are being drawn up for land at Newhouse Farm in Tenbury Road for new recycling facilities, which would replace the community skip, axed two years ago.
Councillors have been trying to find land for a recycling centre ever since, and the new project won support from Shropshire Council, which has pledged £40,000 via the Market Towns Revitalisation Programme to help with preparatory work.
Cleobury may become one of just six places in Britain to get funding from the Government’s Rural Growth Fund after council officials supported the town’s case. If successful it is hoped the project may attract up to £2.5 million in investment.
Gwilym Butler, Shropshire councillor and a member of the authority’s cabinet, said: “It is hoped between 12 and 16 units will be created at Newhouse Farm and Shropshire Council has already backed this to the tune of £40,000 through the Market Towns Revitalisation Programme.
Plans have been drawn up and we are waiting for them to be submitted.
“We could be looking at up to £2.5 million for commercial growth coming into the town. I’m not saying we will definitely get it but we are certainly going for it.
“We have put in a bid for funding saying we want a recycling centre as part of the development.”
