Big freeze keeps grip on Shropshire for rest of week

Monday 6th February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.

The aptly named Snowdrop Meadow is Ketley.

The big freeze will continue to grip Shropshire for the rest of this week, but there is little chance of more snow over the next few days.

Temperatures were expected to around 2C (36F) today with the possibility of patches of freezing fog.

The mercury will continue to drop as the week goes on, plummeting to -3C (27F) tomorrow night and 2C during the day. Temperatures are expected to stay around that for the rest of the week.

Telford & Wrekin Council said it gritted four times in 24 hours during Saturday and then Sunday morning.

The rest of the week is forecast to be mainly dry and bright but often very cold.

‘The Big Freeze’, temperatures ‘plummeting’ to -3 degrees etc. Do you have to be quite so melodramatic? It’s -18 during the DAY where I am in Central Europe. Even that’s nothing compared to, say, Ukraine. And life goes on in these places too.

Fully agree, James. All the hype over the bad weather has been utterly ridiculous. It is winter, snow, ice and low temperatues are to be expected. The amount of snow in the south of the county was minimal. Every time snow is forecast, this and other papers, both local as well as national, go into overdrive with reports which seem to presage the end of the world as we know it.

The snow reports on the television and on the radio have been just as bad with utterly ridiculous comments being made – “… with the snow falling from the sky” (on BBC Breakfast news). Well, where else would it fall from? There was also the BBC reporter at Heathrow speaking of massive disruption – while behind him private cars, taxis, buses all seen arriving and leaving the airport with no problem whatsoever “… and one third of all flights are cancelled. Two thirds of flights are getting away”. Yes, I can do basic maths.
