£4m to boost Shropshire’s house building plans

Government ministers have awarded Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin more than £4 million as its share of a £432 million scheme to boost economic growth and increase house building.

Housing minister Grant Shapps has confirmed Shropshire Council will receive £2,829,583 through the New Homes Bonus Scheme and Telford & Wrekin Council will have its coffers boosted by £1,556,364.

The grant will be paid in 13 monthly instalments with the first cash injection coming in March, Mr Shapps confirmed.

It is aimed at easing housing shortages, and under the scheme the Government will match the council tax raised on each new house for six years.

The cash boost is for 353 councils, and gives Shropshire and Telford the chance to regenerate town centres, reinvigorate local assets or reinvest in local services and enterprise.

Mr Shapps said: “The New Homes Bonus recognises the efforts that have been made over the last year to deliver thousands of new homes and bring empty properties back into use.”

Councillor Malcolm Price, for Shropshire Council, said: “The New Homes Bonus is intended to be invested in communities to improve the quality of life for local people, and as yet no firm decisions have been made about the detail of how the £2.8 million allocated to Shropshire Council will be spent.”

Councillor Richard Overton, responsible for borough town development at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “This is money that we were aware would be coming to Telford & Wrekin Council for new house building and housing growth to take account of additional costs on the council arising from housing growth.”

It comes after the Government also revealed the allocation of the £500 million Growing Places Fund, of which Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin will receive a £5.53 million share from within The Marches area.

The money is welcome investment in growing communities in Telford and Shropshire but when current developments at Lightmoor have ground to a halt because of great crested newts will the developments actually see the light of day?
