A woman was attacked by two thieves when she gave chase to try to stop them stealing from the shop where she worked in Telford, police said today.

The woman, in her 50s, chased after the men and grabbed one of them but the pair turned on her and punched her in the stomach and hit her over the head with a plastic bottle of alcohol.

She was working at Gill’s Food and Wine Store in Park Street, Madeley, when the shoplifters took several bottles of alcohol.

The have-a-go hero was left with injuries to her head and stomach and the men fled.

Police today made an appeal for information about the incident which happened on November 29 at 8.50pm as they released a CCTV image.

Officers said the man in the CCTV might hold vital information.

Telford police spokeswoman Denise Wakefield said: “We are eager to identify this man pictured in the CCTV. We believe he could have information which could help us with our inquiries.

“He was in the shop at the time of the incident and we are hoping he will be able to assist with our investigation. If this is you pictured in the CCTV, or you know who the individual is, then please come forward and speak to us.

“The shop assistant was very shaken by the incident and she was very fortunate she did not suffer more serious injuries.”

Information to Constable Katherine Harratt on 101.
