Shropshire Council facing bill on redundancy payouts

Shropshire Council is facing a six-figure bill after losing an employment tribunal over a redundancy payout.

The authority lost a case brought by one of its former solicitors, Peter Roscoe, after his severance package was cut by 40 per cent without proper consultation.

Unison officials today said there could be more than 100 similar cases, leaving the council facing a six-figure payout.

Mr Roscoe said he should have been paid £18,000 when he took redundancy last July. But from January 1, 2011, the council cut the redundancy payout.

Mr Roscoe claimed staff and unions were not properly consulted and took the authority to a tribunal which ruled in his favour this week. Jackie Kelly, for Shropshire Council, said the authority ‘was disappointed to lose this case’.
