Major plans for Shrewsbury’s £150 million New Riverside shopping centre, set to create more than 700 jobs, have today been submitted by developers.

The ambitious development will see a giant two-level shopping complex on the site of the current Riverside Shopping Centre, housing a department store, 50 shops, office space, 10 restaurants and cafes.

Owners of the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside shopping centres today formally lodged the plans with Shropshire Council.

If approved, it would see the Riverside Shopping Centre bulldozed and rebuilt with links created to the two other existing centres.

A 300-space underground car park will also be built, the existing Raven Meadows multi-storey car park refurbished and the bus station entrance improved and linked to the New Riverside centre.

The shopping mall will be covered by a petal-shaped grid shell roof made of glass, similar to designs at Cabot Circus in Bristol and Trinity Leeds.

Developers today said the plans would provide significant job creation and help claw back expenditure currently lost to similar centres in Telford and Birmingham.

As part of the proposals, the police station, medical practice and nightclub would all be relocated.

Shearer Property Group and Ignis Asset Management, the developers behind the plans, hope to begin development in summer 2013, subject to planning permission, with an opening date scheduled for autumn 2015.

David Rodger, of Ignis Asset Management, said: “The New Riverside development marks an exciting and important step forward.

“We have been delighted by the public’s response to our proposals, and hope that the council sees the merits.”
