Traders’ anger at Market Drayton street market plan
Friday 3rd February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Market Drayton’s traditional weekly street market could be privatised after nearly 800 years in a move which has angered traders.
Shropshire Council is inviting private operators to apply for a tender to run the market, which has been in public hands since 1245.
Traders today claimed they have been left in the dark after being told years ago they would have first option on operating the market should there be any change.
Arthur Bloor, chairman of the Market Drayton market traders’ committee, said the stall-holders’ hopes of running the market as a co-operative appear to have been dashed.
Shropshire Council was unavailable for comment today.

Why don’t they form said co-operative and put in their own tender response?

Just like the by-pass road, this council is a rule unto itself. They do not consider or consult the public they are paid to serve. They have nothing to promote small trade and bring life back to the town other than grant multiple charity shop licences. We hear on the grapevine that Argos is packing up and leaving too.

Farcical. Just look what happened when this council put waste collection out to contract.
