Shropshire awoke to freezing conditions as sub-zero temperatures were recorded across the county.

Commuters were busy scraping their cars free of ice and wrapping up warm as the temperature dropped to -5C (23F) overnight.

In Telford, the cold snap resulted in a state-of-the-art leisure centre being closed due to heating problems.

Contractors worked through the early hours to fix the problem at the Abraham Darby sports facilities, in Ironbridge Road, Madeley.

A spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council said the centre would be open as normal later today. He said there would be updates during the morning on their website and other social media including Facebook and Twitter.

Weather forecasters have warned people to expect more of the same today, with another frost tonight and lows of -4C (25F) this evening.

Conditions will improve slightly tomorrow and over the weekend with Friday’s temperature hitting a high of 2C (36F) in the afternoon dropping to -2C (28F) in the evening.

On Saturday, temperatures will be 0C (32F) with highs in the day reaching 2C (36F). The warmest day is forecast to be Sunday with highs of up to 5C (41F).
