Shrewsbury NHS changes petition fails to gain names
Thursday 2nd February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Hospital campaigners are urging people to back a campaign to keep maternity and children’s services in Shrewsbury, with less than 900 people coming forward to sign a petition.
The official Government e-petition was started in October but has amassed just 897 signatures.
Last year an initial petition opposing the plans attracted 35,000 names.
The petition will close on April 13 and needs 100,000 people in support to force a Government debate on the issue in Parliament.
Under the hospital shake-up plans, women’s and children’s services would be downgraded at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. But NHS chiefs say it would become the main surgical centre in the county.
The Telford Princess Royal Hospital would take on consultant maternity and neonatal and paediatric units.
Campaigner Wendy Hayeck created the petition, Retain Consultant Maternity, Neonatal and Childrens Services (inc Oncology) at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shropshire.
And Shrewsbury & Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski has now appealed to build on the petition again.
He said today: “I would urge constituents who are concerned about the proposals to log onto the website and sign the petition.
“More than 35,000 signed the initial petition so we need people to show their support again.”
In the petition it says: “The children’s cancer ward built by public donations will be closed and also moved to Telford. The outline business case for this relocation clearly shows that there will be a reduction in beds on maternity and the oncology unit will be smaller than currently.”
But hospital trust bosses have warned both hospitals could lose out if the changes are not implemented.
