Official walk routes to be boon for rural Shropshire pubs
Thursday 2nd February 2012, 12:28PM GMT.
Pubs in rural parts of Shropshire are in line for a boost after a series of walks across unspoilt countryside were set up in a bid to encourage visitors to enjoy the outdoors.
A dozen routes across Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) – including in Pontesbury – have been drawn up to encourage people to make the most of the outdoors rather than head elsewhere in their cars.
Final work is being carried out to mark the paths and repair gates and stiles and it is hoped they will be officially unveiled by Easter.
People using smart phones will also be able to find links to the routes by scanning bar codes.
The walks have been set up by officials at Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership as part of the Walking with Offa project. It has been supported by a £93,500 grant from Advantage West Midlands.
Routes have also been set up around Stapeley Common, Bury Ditches and Bucknell.
Clare Fildes, development officer for Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership, said the scheme was aimed at boosting local pubs and making locals and tourists more aware of the beautiful scenery in the area.
She said: “We would like local people to use the routes and support their local pubs. We also hope that perhaps people coming in to the area will, instead of jumping in the car and driving off somewhere else, spend some time in the locality.
“We are not looking to encourage lots more visitors – this is more aimed at getting the people to stay here once they arrive.
“All the walks are on existing routes but we have done some work such as improvements on gates and stiles and making sure all the routes were properly waymarked.
“We are also designing leaflets and beer mats which will advertise the walks in local pubs.”
