Bid to reopen Baschurch Railway Station may be back on track
Thursday 2nd February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
A campaign to reopen a once-thriving north Shropshire railway station more than 50 years after it closed could be back on track as part of a developer’s plans to build homes, it emerged today.
Residents fighting to re-open Baschurch Railway Station, which closed in 1960, suffered a setback last year when Shropshire Council refused to pay for a feasibility study on the scheme due to public spending cuts.
Campaigners who formed the Baschurch Station Group believe a re-opened station would be viable because of the significant growth in the area’s population in the years since it closed.
Now a developer behind plans to build 11 homes in the village has suggested using some of the money it would have to pay to the parish council for community improvements, on funding the railway study.
Developers Fieldcrest Partnership LLP estimate they would have to pay Baschurch Parish Council about £70,000 should the plan for homes be approved.
Under Shropshire Council’s new Community Infrastructure Levy arrangements, developers have to hand over money for community projects based on the scale of the scheme.
A design and access statement from the applicants said: “The parish council will determine the way in which the monies will be spent, but it may be appropriate given the proximity of the site to the railway station, to assist with funding for the research project associated with the campaign to reopen the Baschurch Railway Station.”
Campaigners today welcomed the news with caution because opponents of the housing development, earmarked for land off Station Road, have already raised objections over access, overdevelopment and road safety.
Steve Boulding, spokesman for Baschurch Station Group, said: “Money for the study would be very helpful as it’s an essential component of what we are trying to do.”
