Shrewsbury Premier Inn hotel to be started in March
Wednesday 1st February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Work on an £8 million hotel in Shrewsbury town centre that is expected to create more than 40 jobs is due to start in early March, officials said today.
Last November Premier Inn was given permission to build a five-storey, 136-bedroom hotel and restaurant on the former Telephone House site.
Preliminary work on the site is already under way to ensure it is ready for the construction work to begin.
Today a spokesman for Whitbread, which will run the hotel under its Premier Inn brand, said it was hoped work would start in early March.
He said: “We are currently on site carrying out ground investigations at the moment.”
Officials have said the hotel would provide a major economic boost for the town and help to provide much-needed jobs.
When the plans were lodged a statement in support of the application said the hotel was expected to be popular with business and tourist visitors. It described Shrewsbury as a ‘key tourist destination’.
