Telford school-run parents warned on speeding
Monday 30th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Parents who put children’s lives at risk by breaking the speed limit and parking illegally outside schools in Telford will face court action, police warned today.
Officers from the policing team in north Telford have been forced to take action outside schools in Wrockwardine Wood, Trench and Donnington after a series of complaints from other parents.
Operation SOS – Safer Outside Schools – has now been launched.
Police said that some drivers were parking ‘irresponsibly’ and were speeding outside schools.
Officers have been visiting schools to warn drivers about their actions.
Drivers found flouting the law will be firstly spoken to by officers and reported which could then lead to a fine and penalty points.
They could also face a driving awareness course or a court appearance.
The campaign has also involved posters and flyers.
Constable John Walters, local policing officer for Wrockwardine Wood and Trench, said he hoped motorists would start to obey the law.
He also pointed out that motorists would be reported for any offences committed, rather than given an immediate fixed penalty notice which most people believe they would get.
He said: “Our current campaign is primarily aimed at vehicle users, reminding them of their responsibilities outside schools when dropping off and picking up children.
“We continue to receive complaints concerning irresponsible parking and driving speeds at these locations.”
He added: “It’s important to remind those committing offences that they will now be reported for most offences.”
Anybody with any concerns about parking issues outside their local schools should contact their local policing team.
