Fury of disabled girl’s parents over kerb outside house

A row has broken out between the father of a four-year-old disabled girl and council bosses over a footpath kerb outside his home.

Little Sarah Boardman, who lives in Hadley, Telford, underwent an eight-hour operation on her neck at Birmingham Children’s Hospital last June.

Doctors have said she cannot make any sudden movements because of her neck and her father Ian, 42, has to drive no faster than 50mph when giving her lifts.

A row has now broken out after Mr Boardman and his wife, Janet, 50, asked Telford & Wrekin Council to install a dropped kerb outside their home.

When the work was nearly finished Mr Boardman claimed the council then asked for £260 towards it.

It was then raised again to its original position – and Mr Boardman claims it was because he refused to pay the money.

Mr Boardman said: “Doctors and a physiotherapist have written letters to say she needs the dropped kerb and I just can’t afford it.”

Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “It was decided that the dropped kerbs could not be installed completely until the telephone equipment was protected.

“The kerbs were therefore re-instated as quickly as possible to make the site safe. The resident will not be charged for this essential work.”

A meeting between Mr Boardman and the council will now take place next week.
