Woman, 85, in Oswestry fire drama
Friday 27th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
An 85-year-old woman was lucky to be alive today after neighbours came to her rescue after a blaze started at her home near Oswestry, firefighters said.
Officials said a smoke alarm which alerted the pensioner to the fire at her Maesbury home last night also helped save her life.
The woman received first aid after being helped by neighbours from her smoke logged house in Back Lane, just after 8pm.
Crew manager Adrian Bowen, based at Oswestry, said: “She was warming up some decongestant oil in a pan and the pan ran dry. She uses the oil to help her with a breathing problem.
“Thankfully she had a working fire alarm. It sounded but she didn’t know what the noise was so in fact she called her neighbours.
“Her neighbours ran around straight away and got her out of the property.
“When we arrived she was standing outside with the neighbours.”
He added: “The living room and kitchen was very heavily smokelogged and if she had gone off to bed that would have been the end of her I am afraid.”
Viv Evans, who came to the pensioner’s aid with her husband Roy, said: “We didn’t know anything was wrong until our neighbour called to say can you come around because my house is full of smoke. We had to bang on the windows and eventually she managed to get the door open.
“We didn’t think anything of it. It is something anyone would do.”
