The sale of The Buttermarket nightclub is ‘excellent news’ for Shrewsbury, business leaders today said.

More than £1 million investment is to be pumped into the club on Howard Street following the sale of the property to town businessman Martin Monahan, who owns the town’s Peach Tree Restaurant, C:21 Nightclub, and Spirit Champagne Bar and Nightclub. pap tad please

Businesses and council leaders have welcomed the news and said it would help make the area even more vibrant and attractive to visitors.

About 60 full and part-time jobs will be created when the multi-use venue opens again to the public in September.

The Cellars part of the club will be open by April, bosses confirmed today.

Councillor Peter Nutting, leader of Shrewsbury Town Council, said: “I think its excellent news for the town and the management of C:21 over the years has been brilliant so I can’t think of anyone better to take over the running of it.

“All jobs are most welcome in this town, particularly when it is coming from a reliable employer so this is great for Shrewsbury as a whole.”

Sheila Sager, owner of Shrewsbury Bakehouse on Castle Gates, which is close to the nightclub, said: “In the past three years this whole area has completely turned around and this will be yet another thing to bring people down this way.

“Anything that creates this number of jobs is fantastic and will help make it an even more vibrant area of the town.”

Simon Bendall, manager of Station News, which is near the train station, said it would particularly help night time trade in the town centre.

He added: “It is nice to see one of the oldest nightclubs in the area coming back into use as there is not much choice at all for people at the moment.

“I’m not sure to what extent it will affect my day time trade but it will certainly generate more business for the area in general, particularly at night time.”
