Accused says eye stabbing an accident

A woman from Ludlow accused of stabbing a man in the eye with a kitchen knife told a jury it was an accident and that she had not made any stabbing actions and was unaware of causing injury.

Shrewsbury Crown Court was told victim Shane Weir is now virtually blind in one eye after the incident in the town.

Sharon Hughes, 38, of Sandpits Avenue, and her daughter Stacey Mills, 19, of Ferney Avenue, Ludlow, are accused of wounding with intent and unlawful wounding on October 29, 2010. They both deny the charges.

Giving evidence, Hughes yesterday told the court she and her daughter were at her home and when she went to the toilet she heard shouting. She found her daughter had left and went to find her.

The court heard Hughes found Mills with a knife.

She said: “I took it off her. I put it down my top.”

Hughes said a van sped up with Mr Weir at the wheel and a confrontation between Mills and Mr Weir’s girlfriend took place.

Hughes said she intervened but was knocked to the ground by Mr Weir who then pushed her against a car. She said this was when she felt the knife against her chest so she pulled it out and dropped it on the ground.

The court heard this was when Mr Weir let go and walked away and she went back to the house. Hughes told the court: “Stacey came back and said I had stabbed him in the eye.” She added: “I wasn’t aware I had hurt him at all.”

The trial continues.
