A company is offering 20 apprenticeships in Shropshire – but only five people have so far applied.

Uaspire in Telford wants to train up future security guards who could work at open air events including Glastonbury and this year’s Olympic Games.

But boss Paul Downward said it appears that no one wants the apprenticeships and added he was stunned by the poor response to a Job Centre advert.

The course is aimed at 17 to 24-year-olds where figures have shown high unemployment.

Mr Downward said he has advertised the scheme at the Job Centre for nearly two weeks but has only received four applications.

The course starts at the end of April and will last about six months.

“We put an advert in the job centre but the replies have been really slow, despite the report of unemployment in the area,” he said.

“We have had lots of hits on the website but only five people have applied for it.

“Even if they don’t have a driving licence, we put them through a crash course to get it. They would also get a lot of life experience through this.

“We would then work with local companies where they can take on full-time employment at the end of it.

“The Government get a kick for not providing opportunities but this does question peoples’ commitment to work. I would say to people to come and show us what they have got.”

Mr Downward added the job prospects for someone with the qualification will increase and could see them working at some of the country’s top events.

“You will come out with a qualification and be able to work in nightclubs and on doors.

“We also offer an NVQ in safety and you can work at football grounds and open air events like Glastonbury. I have supplied Glastonbury with security for the last five festivals.”
