The team from Ellesmere on Eggheads last night

Five brainboxes flew the flag for Shropshire on TV quiz show Eggheads – but were beaten by some of the biggest brains in Britain.

The Red Lion Rebels from Ellesmere could not crack their opponents – a trivia dream team with of some of the country’s top quiz champions – on the BBC Two quiz hosted by Jeremy Vine.

Team members and supporters gathered at the Red Lion Coaching Inn, in Church Street, to watch the programme last night.

The team was made up of pub quiz buffs Janet Benson, 45, a production quality controller; Rob Duncan, 42, a production engineer; Martin Arrowsmith, 42, a production supervisor; Ben Mountford, 38, a researcher and Trevor Parry, 67, a school receptionist.

They were in the running to win £4,000 if they could defeat their opponents. Along the way Rod managed to oust Britain’s first Who Wants to be a Millionaire champion Judith Keppel in the sport round.

And the team kept the pressure up on the Eggheads all the way to the end of the final general knowledge round.

But they came undone when finalists Trevor and Rob failed to correctly identify China as the world’s second biggest economy, choosing India.

At last night’s showing in the pub, team members said they went to Glasgow last year for the day long filming.

Mr Duncan said: “It was a wonderful experience.”
