Telford & Wrekin Council’s first MD starts job
Friday 20th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
The first ever managing director of Telford & Wrekin Council has officially taken over at the helm of the authority.
Richard Partington’s appointment was rubber stamped at a meeting of the full council last night where he received praise from the authority’s top brass.
Council leader Councillor Kuldip Sahota told the meeting: “This is a very challenging position and it is encouraging that an individual from within the organisation has demonstrated the skills and determination to take on this role. The personnel board concluded unanimously that Richard Partington performed very strongly in all of the selection procedures.
“The cabinet has full confidence he will perform very strongly in the job.”
Mr Partington is on a salary of £137,000-a-year which Councillor Sahota said was £16,400 less than the chief executive he replaced, Victor Brownlees. Mr Brownlees left the authority with a reported £125,000 redundancy payment.
Councillor Sahota has previously said Mr Partington had already delivered proposals for a new management structure, moved the co-operative council proposals forward and helped find the £40 million savings the council has to find due to Government cuts over the next three years.
Mr Partington started his council career as an admin assistant at North Shropshire District Council. He joined Telford & Wrekin Council in 1991, working as best value manager and head of policy, performance and partnerships.
