Whitchurch High Street revamp back on the cards
Thursday 19th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
A scheme to transform Whitchurch High Street and bring new business into the town centre is back on the cards.
Plans have been re-submitted by Michael White to redevelop buildings on the street and create a restaurant, offices, apartments and eight shop units. permission for the scheme at 34-40 High Street was granted by North Shropshire District Council in 2009, but has now expired.
The development is expected to create about 30 jobs and it is hoped the units will attract major national retailers to the area.
Mr White said: “It is a renewal of planning permission because previous permission has now expired.
“Unfortunately nobody has come forward to fund the scheme.”
News the project could be back on track has been welcomed by councillors and business leaders in Whitchurch who say it will transform the high street.
Councillor Rob Hewson, the deputy mayor, said: “It is something I welcome. It would be brilliant and make the high street look fantastic.
“The property is lovely. It is old and has got big windows and iron framework.”
Councillor Hewson added the potential for new jobs would give the town a boost in the current economic climate.
Therese Hickland, chairman of Whitchurch Chamber of Trade, added: “The chamber welcomes any investment into the high street, particularly investment that brings employment. We also support anyone that is prepared to carry out a development like this to improve the town.
“It is quite an old building. I think Michael is aware that people think it is a bit of an eyesore and currently does very little to enhance the high street. We wish him luck taking the scheme forward.”
The scheme includes two offices, two apartments, a coffee bar and restaurant and the re-development of land to create the shops.
People have until February 8 to comment.
