Shrewsbury shop workers say parking staff causing fines misery
Thursday 19th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Parking attendants are causing misery for Shrewsbury shop workers, it has been claimed. Staff at Argos on the Meole Brace Retail Park claim they have been fined £60 on Shrewsbury Town match days.
They say they were fined by enforcers Excel Parking Services despite displaying a notice to say they worked there.
The company makes sure vehicles without permits do not stay longer than 90 minutes during match days at the Greenhous Meadow stadium in Oteley Road.
Today a spokesman for Excel Parking Services said its parking charge notices had been issued correctly.
Lisa Strain, deputy manager of Argos, said three or four members of staff had received tickets recently.
She said: “It’s not just us. I saw one man who works at Sports World get a ticket when he had a notice in his window to say he worked there. It was just ignored.”
Meanwhile, Craig Davies, deputy manager of Sainsbury’s in Meole Brace, said the company no longer used Excel because of complaints from customers.
Argos employee Jacqueline Prince, 40, of Copthorne in Shrewsbury, said she received two tickets, despite a notice in her window indicating that she worked at the store. Her partner Neil Gresty said he tried to appeal the decision but was told she still had to pay.
Mr Gresty said he had since received final warnings from the company threatening court action.
An Excel spokesman said: “On the two dates in question, there were no signs or indications that the vehicle was exempt from any terms and conditions of the car park.
“The parking charge notices were issued correctly for exceeding the maximum stay period of 90 minutes and no valid permit was displayed in the vehicle. Both parking charges remain unpaid.”
