Praise as £25,000 is raised for North Shropshire hospital
Thursday 19th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Health campaigners have praised people for their generosity after they helped to raise £25,000 for a hospital in north Shropshire in the last 12 months.
During 2011 people dug deep to buy equipment for Whitchurch Community Hospital. Margaret Hiles, chairman of the Friends of Whitchurch Community Hospital, said the money was raised from a range of events.
They included a golf competition at the Hill Valley Hotel and an auction of vintage vehicles in Prees.
Items bought for the community hospital in the last 12 months ranged from specialist equipment to newspapers.
Buying items such as specialist eye equipment means people in Whitchurch and the surrounding areas don’t have to travel to Shrewsbury or Telford for treatment.
Mrs Hiles said: “During our past financial year we have spent approximately £25,000 on many items of equipment, as well as small things for the comfort of patients such as newspapers and Christmas presents.
“I wish to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who has supported the Friends of Whitchurch Hospital in so many ways throughout the past year.
“Your generosity is overwhelming and never ceases to amaze me, especially in these difficult times.
“Your kindness has enabled us to do so much for the benefit of the patients.”
The news has marked the end of a testing year for the hospital which saw its dedicated ward for elderly mentally ill patients close.
The 16-bed Beech Ward closed in July as part of an overhaul of mental health provision in the county.
Closure plans were originally announced in 2010 and were met with fierce opposition from residents in the town who collected 5,000 names for a petition.
Since its closure health bosses have been in talks about future uses of the ward and what would benefit the town most.
