Masked robber targets Telford bookies

A masked robber threatened to pull a gun on a cashier at a Telford bookmakers before fleeing with hundreds of pounds.

The man, who had his hood up and a scarf covering part of his face, struck at the Coral bookmakers in Dawley at 9pm last night.

He told terrified staff he had a gun in his pocket but nobody would get hurt if they handed over cash. A female cashier put about £300 in a money bag and handed it to the robber.

Police said the robber left the High Street shop and fled towards the back of the Co-Op and Portley Road.

Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police said: “Although no gun was actually seen by staff in the shop this was a frightening incident for the individuals who witnessed the robbery.

“We are speaking to these witnesses in detail today but are also very keen to speak to anyone else who believes they may have information about the robbery.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 0300 333 3000.
