Objections deal blow to plans for Baschurch shop
Wednesday 18th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Controversial plans for a new convenience store in Baschurch have been dealt a fresh blow after councillors upheld objections to the scheme.
Developers behind plans to build the store on land near Newtown Garage unveiled amendments to their original plans at last night’s meeting of Baschurch Parish Council.
They include a pedestrian crossing in Shrewsbury Road, improved drainage, widened pavements, extra car parking and a fence to the rear of the site.
Matt Marsden, boss of applicant Lancroft Developments Limited, said the shop would create 23 local jobs and vowed there would be no deliveries outside opening hours.
But he failed to win over councillors who upheld their decision taken at a special parish council meeting in November to oppose the plans.
About 40 people attended last night’s heated meeting at the village hall.
Many raised renewed fears over noise, traffic problems and causing harm to existing local shops like the post office, hardware shop, farm shop and village store.
Resident Mel Bamford reminded councillors more than 750 people have signed a petition against the plans.
Two parish councillors abstained and four voted in favour of upholding their original objection and awaiting the decision of Shropshire Council’s north planning committee, which is to consider the application on a date to be fixed.
