Ellesmere aims to light royal beacon for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
Wednesday 18th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Ellesmere could mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by becoming one of the towns to light a beacon during official events to commemorate the milestone in June, it was revealed today.
The town is aiming to become one of the chosen places to light one of the 2012 beacons being organised by the Queen’s Jubilee pageant master, which will span the length and breadth of the country.
In Ellesmere, a task and finish group has been formed to organise the town’s celebrations for the jubilee and will be meeting next week to talk about the plans.
The move would see one beacon placed in a prominent position in the town and lit on June 4 – the day of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The town council is hoping there will also be a special treat in store for Ellesmere’s younger residents by offering them the chance to get their hands on a special souvenir mug.
Similar memorabilia was also offered to children at the time of the Queen’s Silver and Golden Jubilees and it is one of the ideas the group is discussing.
Councillor Pat McLaughlin said: “One of the plans is to light a beacon.
“The idea is to have 2012 of them across the country and there is a registration form you have to fill in.
“Another idea is to have a firework display, but this would be very costly.
“I think the Queen is keen for everybody to take part in street parties as well.”
Councillor McLaughlin also confirmed that churches in Ellesmere were set to organise thanksgiving services based on the details handed down from Buckingham Palace.
Councillor Alan Clarke, mayor of Ellesmere, said: “Lighting a beacon is something that we are keen on doing.”
Mandy Evans, town clerk, said councillors were hoping to meet with numerous groups in the town to help coordinate events for the jubilee.
On June 4 thousands of beacons will be lit around the UK and throughout the Commonwealth to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Other events taking place during the jubilee weekend include the Diamond Jubilee Pageant, the Big Jubilee Lunch, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee BBC Concert at Buckingham Palace.
