Church Stretton chiefs vow to fight for £70,000 road scheme

Councillors in Church Stretton have pledged to fight a decision to axe a £70,000 road improvement scheme which was planned in the town centre.

Members of Church Stretton Town Council believe plans to remove eight on-street parking spaces on High Street should go ahead, claiming it would allow pavements to be widened to make the area safer for shoppers and pedestrians.

And at a council meeting last night they pledged to look into a number of options to revive Church Stretton Town Centre Enhancement Scheme.

They have also aimed a shot at the Concerned Residents of Church Stretton action group, which they say mounted a ‘misleading’ campaign to block the plans – a claim denied by the group.

More than 1,100 people signed a petition distributed by members of CROS, who claimed removing the parking spaces would discourage people from shopping on one of the busiest streets.

Members of Shropshire Council’s south planning committee shelved the town centre enhancement scheme on January 4.

Councillors were furious a package containing the petition collected by CROS was circulated to members of the south planning committee before the vote on January 4.

But Helen Leathers, a member of CROS, said: “We have not in any way been creating a misleading campaign.”
