Teen beauty spot drinkers are ramblers, not rebels
- Dave Burrows
Most of Ashley Brothwood’s pals work in shops or fast food restaurants – but the 20-year-old has branched out on a very different career path.
The trained accountant, from Telford, has become the man police call to clean up crime scenes or trashed drug dens. He said: “Everyone thinks it’s very interesting when I tell them, but it’s not a job for the squeamish.
“I’ve had to clean up after someone slit their wrist, and if we get called in to somewhere where someone’s died and hasn’t been found for a few days then it’s not very nice.
“You’ve got to cope with bad smells as well, but I’ve been doing bins for two years so you get used to that.”
Mr Brothwood, from Dawley started a traditional cleaning business when he was 18 after working with his father, Spencer, at Shropshire Cleaning Services.
But after a conversation with a colleague he decided to branch out and offer more specialised services.
He said: “I got the idea when I was cleaning a house for a letting agent. Another man was there doing the carpets and he said his wife used to work for the police and they were always looking for people to clean up crime scenes.
“A lot of people think that the police clean up after crimes, but they don’t.
“It’s up the the property owner to clean up, and if it’s something bad that’s happened then the family doesn’t necessarily want to clean up and add extra stress, so that’s where I can help.”
Mr Brothwood added: “I didn’t expect to be doing this when I was at school.
“I went to college and trained in accountancy, thinking that then I’d have something to fall back on if the company didn’t work out.
“But it’s going really well, and I’m still using the accountancy at work.”
