Shropshire hospitals net £1.3m from parking charges
Monday 16th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Parking charges at Shropshire’s two main hospitals raised more than £1.3 million last year – sparking fresh calls today for the fees to be axed.
Visitors and patients forked out £1,314,035 to park at the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal hospitals in 2010/11.
The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital collected £751,944 and Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital £546,776, with another £15,315 collected from fines.
The figures were revealed by Telford borough councillor Mike Ion, who is now calling for fees to be lowered and eventually axed.
Adam Cairns, the hospital trust’s chief executive, said: “Our hospital car parking charges are a maximum of £2 per day and we also have a wide range of concessions.”

Yeah, ‘they’ are robbing us left, right & centre. It’s bad enough being ill, or having a loved one in hospital, without being robbed by this tax on the sick and their relatives & friends.
And, to kick you even more, you have to put in your car reg. no. – often in the pouring rain – to prevent you from passing on any spare time to someone else, thus generating a modicum of goodwill. ‘They’ should be ashamed of themselves, but they’re not. They’ll probably be nominated for some ‘honour’ or other, for services to ‘fleecing the community’.
