Police to step up patrols over dog fouling
Monday 16th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Police have been called in to deal with the issue of dog fouling after a complaint was made by an ‘incensed’ resident.
Now patrols are to be stepped up in Highley to stop dog owners allowing their pets to leave mess in gardens and along village’s streets.
Shropshire Councillor Mary Nicholls said the issue was a serious health hazard and vowed to take action against anyone letting their pets foul in public places.
“I was contacted by a resident who was absolutely incensed by the frequency of dog fouling along her street and even in her front garden,” she said.
“Despite witnessing the event and a subsequent request to the owner to clear the mess up, the owner flatly refused leading to a formal complaint about the incident being made to Shropshire Council and me.
“Some dog owners do not consider dog fouling on the highway to be either a health risk to other people or a form of anti-social behaviour.
“I have every sympathy with dog owners who feel stigmatised by other people’s behaviour despite conscientiously clearing up after their own dogs – and being responsible dog owners themselves.
“I had a dog for over 17 years so appreciate the pleasures and demands that dog owning brings but children, wheelchair users and pedestrians should not have to traverse pavements because of the uncaring few who persist in letting their animals foul our highways and social areas,” she added.
Shropshire Council has recorded the incident and said it would be stepping up patrols in the area.
Police followed up on the complaint and made a personal visit to the resident concerned.
